Mine Safety Best Way to Honor Sen. Byrd

I commend my friend Senator John D. Rockefeller for introducing the Robert C. Byrd Mine and Workplace Safety and Health Act.  Senator Rockefeller has been a tireless advocate for mine safety and miners throughout West Virginia and our nation.  By introducing this legislation, Senator Rockefeller and the bill’s cosponsors, Senators Harkin, Murray, and Manchin, have taken an important step forward in ensuring that the need to strengthen the safety laws for our miners remains on the Senate’s agenda.

Last April, I pledged to the families of the miners killed in the Upper Big Branch disaster that we would honor the memory of their loved ones.  Moving forward with legislation to reform the behavior of operators who don’t take mine safety seriously is the best way I know to honor their memories.  I look forward to working with Congress to move forward with legislation because every worker deserves to come home safely at the end of shift.

I do not understand why there is a need for new legislation. Wasn’t it found that the operators were not following the existing MSHA rules and there was an inability of the MSHA officers to enforce on a consistent basis?
