A Memorial Day Call to Action

Across our great country this Memorial Day weekend, Americans will honor the men and women who have defended our nation. Here at the Department of Labor, as Secretary Solis has often said, we believe the best way to honor the veterans among us is to give them every opportunity to find employment and be able to care for their families.

Today, I want to call to your attention an article written by Steve Cahillane, the president and chief executive officer of Coca-Cola Refreshments. He calls on the business community to hire military service members transitioning to civilian life:

“Military veterans bring the leadership, discipline and commitment to excellence that winning companies look for in their associates. They demonstrate tremendous accountability, and they’re hardworking and loyal.”

I couldn’t agree more. And let me add that the  commitments from companies like Coca-Cola and the White House Joining Forces Initiative will help ensure that the needs of veterans and families are on our minds every day, not just on Memorial Day.

Is there a bus which goes to the grave site in Bowen down the Cape from Boston to visit the graves site of the veterans due to my brother Ray Skillman, lll is buried there. I am out of work and would like to know if possible to visit with a group going to the grave site. If I had to pay, I could pay by payments per month.

I also agree: everyone deserves to be employed and put forth an honest effort toward earning your wages. I like how Chase banks also has a similar program set up to hire veterans.
